Get the right tools to empower your spiritual coaching
Leading our kids to God in this deceiving world that is full of temptation and lies has become such a challenging mission. You might not find it so difficult when your children are still under 10. However, as they grow up under the influence of so many “isms” (namely pragmatism, materialism, relativism, humanism and secularism. You may want to read James Montgomery Boice’s “What Happened to the Gospel of Grace” for more information), the chance is they lose their interest or the grip on faith and then drop churches when they enter high schools or universities.
As partners with families and parents in BAC, we always strive to empower and equip them so that we can lay a solid spiritual foundation for the kids in their formative years.
As promised in my last blog, we are here to provide the parents with some good resources in their discipleship coaching. This month I would recommend some good websites and safe YouTube Channels as coaching or devotional materials. Next time, I would recommend some good books for parenting or spiritual growth.
Websites:
Kids of Integrity - Home | Kids of Integrity
A website developed by Focus on the Family. It is meant to be a tool for growing Godly characters. There are 32 lessons on Godly characters such as compassion, generosity, joy, kindness, self-control, etc. You will be truly amazed by how many sections are there in each lesson. There are parents’ prayers, kids’ talk with God, memory verses, craft ideas, bible stories to illustrate the lessons, and creative discipline. They even provide calendars for parents to jot down and keep track of kids’ journey. You can use this free website as your one-year coaching tool to shape your kids’ characters!
Kids corner - Kids Devotions, Bible Stories, and more! | Kids Corner
This is a free resource developed by ReFrame Ministries.1
In the website, you will find Devotional corner, Bible study, Bible stories and DIY activities.
They provide weekly materials in “Devotional Corner”. Simple but insightful for kids. Bible stories are in audio only while Bible study has short videos. In each devotional topic, it has a memory verse, life application, prayer and relevant bible stories if you want a meatier devotional time. They use a reward system to encourage kids to complete lessons and unlock rewards. Quite cool.
Keys for kids - Keys for Kids Ministries | Daily Devotions, Streaming Radio & Games!
In the website, you will find “Keys for kids Daily Devotional”, a fun and practical daily devotions delivered to kids: https://www.keysforkids.org/Programming/Keys-for-Kids-Daily-Devotional/Read-Listen
And “Parent Minute” that is a one-minute daily feature focused on Christian parenting tips:
Calvary Curriculum
Please use the original version in the link provided below. They have revision but you have to be a member in order to access the lesson plans. So staying in the original versions will be simpler for you.
Children’s Curriculum (Original) – Calvary Curriculum
In this website, you will find a very comprehensive curriculum almost covering the whole Bible. For some units, they even provide you with 5-day devotional materials on top of a lesson plan. In each lesson, activity sheets are also attached. Since Calvary Curriculum is such an excellent resource to teach kids God’s word, Children Worship has been using their curriculum as part of our teaching materials too. If you have followed through what we are teaching at Children Worship, you can go to this website and pick the relevant devotional materials for your devotional time with your kids.
YouTube Channels - Watch safe and fun YouTube channels with your kids
Our kids have got so much stimulation today and may not be willing to just listen to your Bible stories. In this case, you might find some safe but fun YouTube channels helpful. You can watch the video clips together with your kids. After that, use questions to facilitate a brief discussion and then wrap up with a prayer. That will be an effortless but fun and meaningful way to engage your kids to learn God’s word.
YouTube channels I recommend:
Saddleback Kids: https://www.youtube.com/@SaddlebackKids
This channel is developed by the Saddleback Church. Tons of animated videos are used to tell bible stories. They can be used as standalone Bible lessons that parents can view with their kids. Their videos are designed for elementary kids, preschool kids and early childhood.
Family moments: https://www.youtube.com/@familymomentsfun
In this channel, Pastor Robbie and kids use very cool object lessons to illustrate or explain the scripture. They release new videos every Friday.
SBC Discovery Kids: https://www.youtube.com/@sbcdiscoverykids1241
Weekly teachings were uploaded by SBC (Scottsdale Bible: https://www.scottsdalebible.com/about-sb). They use humorous ways to act out bible stories and tell the lessons behind them.
Of course, there are many more channels that are suitable for Christian families too. I only pick the ones that I also use and am confident they’re helpful and safe to use.
Hope all of these are useful for you. Most importantly, make efforts to spend time with God and your kids together. 15 to 20 minutes a night can go a long way indeed.
