January 2023
Loran Tang, recruiter and training coordinator of Children Ministry
As we kick off the new year, I want to take this opportunity to invite our new Assistant Director in Children Ministry, Cheryl, to share about her journey to the new role at BAC!
Hello everyone, my name is Cheryl. I am humbly grateful for God’s calling for me, and since October 2022, I have joined BAC’s pastoral staff as the Assistant Director of Children Ministry. I started attending BAC when I first moved to Canada as a teenager, and since then, BAC has been my home church.
As a teenager and young adult, my passion was in art, design, and Japanese culture. Never had I thought about working with children, and not even to mention becoming a teacher! However, through my personal and work experiences, I saw the brokenness in the world and the hurt people experienced in their lives. A thought came to me: how different people’s lives could be if they knew Jesus, especially if they started young! Answering to the calling, God miraculously opened a door for me, and I became a teacher in 2006. Not only was I able to teach children, but also able to use my love in art and Japanese language skills on the job. It was truly amazing! I have been a teacher for seventeen years and have taught in different settings, working with children ages two and a half to twelve. Over the years, my passion in art has not faded, but rather shifted to focus on teaching art to children in a way that nurtures their minds and creativity. I am currently a grade three teacher at a Christian school in Burnaby. It is such a joy to be able to share with my students about Jesus’ love for them anytime in the classroom.
I am married to my husband, whom we met at BAC’s youth fellowship when we were high schoolers. We have two children who are ten and twelve years old. Being a parent and a teacher, I have first-hand experience in the challenges of raising children in a society that is constantly going against Biblical values. Helping our children build a strong spiritual foundation from a young age is fundamental.
As we welcome the new year 2023, BAC Children Ministry strives to cultivate spiritual growth in our children through Biblical teaching, strengthening relationships with God, and learning to walk the faith journey alongside other believers. To make our children the disciples of Jesus, we understand that it does not happen only on Sundays at church. Our goal is to partner with parents to be disciples, and together we help our children develop their faith in Christ. Parents will get involved in the children’s programs as helpers, and complete different take-home tasks with their children. By making church and home connections, children learn that their faith is not a “church thing” that happens only on Sundays.
Together, we are growing stronger! Looking forward to partnering with you in the new year.
